I thought we had moved to a tourist ghost town when we first moved from the city to the suburb. I thought, "Figures, the rapture occurred, and of course, I've been left on earth."
I had come from a place where going to the Post Office was a full day field trip. Pack the kid's lunches, and plan to stay the day. Now, I found myself pulling into the the front rock star parking space right in front of the building. Then, I walked in and heard the echo of my footsteps that can only come from a building devoid of human bodies. We walked straight up to the teller who was waiting to serve us, who sat smiling and eager to serve us, and only us, and then finished our business in 3 minutes. Tops.
That scene left me feeling like zombies had come in the night and wiped out the town's population. The next errand of the day had me feeling no more comforted, as we again pulled into VIP parking at the town grocery store. We entered, took our pick of grocery carts, and off we went, where every one was eager to help the customer of the day.
Sad to say, I've gotten used to being the Only Fawned Over Child of this small suburb, and I feel my blood pressure rise if I have to WAIT in line with even one other customer competing for my pampered title of Sole Customer.
God save me if I ever become a city mouse again, I'll have to have a direct pipeline set up to Canada for the anxiety meds I'll be sure to need.
